Proof of Concept
Finding another way to reach audience in case of reduction to the number of DTT Multiplexes is connected with the restructuring of the 700MHz band, and possibly the 600MHz band. This is why the Development of 5G FeMBMS over DVB-I Standard was initiated. All tests are performed at the Science and Technology Park of Crete.
Stream broadcast via HbbTV is being actively used among most regional and local broadcasters in Greece. However DVB-I over 5G has the potential to offer a far more integrated solution that individual HbbTV app streaming.
The reason behind this is that DVB-I offers a user experience that every television viewer is already familiar with. We’ve been working with the majority of regional and local broadcasters, supported by their associations.
5G Broadcast technology enables an unlimited number of users to access a single, lossless data stream. It is based on the 3GPP Further Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (FeMBMS) standard, allowing for linear programme data streaming through long-range radio cells, with an effective coverage of up to 70km each. A unified, steady data stream is being broadcast using a high-voltage transmitter.
All cellular devices in range may receive the linear TV programme being broadcast through this stream. Taking into account that the signal is only broadcast once to all the receiving devices, there is no network throttling based on the number of receiving devices per cell, and thus the broadcast quality remains pristine regardless of the number of devices involved. Even during live streaming events, where there is a large influx of viewers at the same time, there is no loss of data whatsoever.
